Alaska basically has produced zero coffee
I was in Alaska, which is um How's Alaska? Alaska is really interesting. I um I'm really glad I went to Alaska. I want to go. Um you should there's it's a kind of place you only need to go once. It's very It's a strange place. You see a polar bear. What? See a polar bear? I didn't see a I saw a whale. Oh, that's better. That was cool. That was really cool. Nice. I read Moby Dick over the summer. So, when I went there, I was like, you know what? I really want to go on a whailing boat and like see Oh, you went on the whailing trip. I went on a one of these like six-hour tours of the fjords uh off of Anchorage. And it was pretty cool. It was really cool. And I saw a glacier which was also amazing. Um Alaska is a very strange place. You literally feel like you're going to fall off the edge of the world there. Like you just feel like you're at the end of the world in a way that is hard to describe because I've been to islands. I've been to rural places. I've been to beaches, etc. It just feels viscerally distant like you are at the far. It feels empty. It feels anarchistic. You don't um apparently like a for example. So there's uh Anchorage itself there's sort of a lot of vagrants. It's very frankly alcohol heavy city. Like every three stores in downtown Anchorage is a a bar and not a particularly nice bar like a grimy dive bar. It's like adventurers and vagrants and what you know in a different era they like a wild west town or something hobos you know that's what they would have referred to just sort of people like drifting through drifting through a lot drifter it's like a drifter town and it's uh you don't really um apparently there's a widespread phenomenon in Alaska of unlicensed pilots so a lot of people because there's the only way to get from one city to another city in many cases is by plane So, a lot of people own planes. A lot of people don't bother getting their pilots's license. And also, apparently, a lot of people don't care that they don't get their pilots. No, I didn't. I did not. I did not get I did not get in a plane. There's actually a fairly long history. A lot of like Alaska politicians have died in plane crashes. Yeah. I mean, the weather and then you're you have to fly everywhere. Fly everywhere. You're in this tiny little plane. Weather's awful. Yeah. That's not totally my thing, but it's just part of the culture, which I totally respect, but it's just a very it's an anarchistic libertarian culture, which is fine, but I think uh and then the light is crazy, so it stayed light. You know, it's only 3 hours of darkness a day. So, you just see between the extreme cold and the extreme light and everything, it just sort of I think I'm trying to think of a nice way to put it. You have to be neurologically a little different to stick it out there. Yeah. Yeah. What were you doing there? Uh, it was really fun. Um, so Mary Daly is the president of the San Francisco branch of the Federal Reserve and Alaska is part of her district because there's like seven western states and she does a she goes up there like once a quarter to talk to local businesses and business leaders about what they're seeing on the ground so that she can help set monetary policy in some way. And she invited us on the p podcast to come along. And we interviewed some local businesses. And we interviewed uh guy who runs a trucking company in Alaska that sort of goes between Anchorage. Exactly. Them goes between Anchorage and the oil fields up north. We interviewed someone who owns the biggest furniture chain in Alaska. We talked to people at the Port of Anchorage. So like I said, you should go to Alaska. Okay. But you know, you should go there once. What'd you eat there? I had some nice um spam sushi. You know what I'm talking about? Yeah. Yeah. Like Yeah, exactly. It actually feels like cold Hawaii. Alaska is like cold Hawaii. Yeah. It's It's very cuz it also has sort of an Asian vibe. Um and it's very, you know, sort of US militaryheavy, etc. Kind of like Hawaii, etc. So, it just feels like cold Hawaii. The food is kind of similar. It's sort of starchy. It's not that I mean, every time I'm like, "How is this Mochco Loco? How are you? How would you invent like a beef patty with gravy and egg here on the beach? I love it. I love a mocha. Yeah. Yeah. But it's crazy that that's what they're eating on the beach. Yeah. You You don't think that like Right. It seems like it would be from Alaska. Yes. Like if you if you're in Hawaii, you think, "Oh, I'm just going to eat all this like fresh food and stuff like that because that's how your mind sort of intuitively feels when you're in a tropical location. You eat something sort of light, etc." Instead, you just get this absolute protein, fat, and carb bomb. There's 2,000 calories and I love that stuff. Like when I've been to Alaska a couple times a couple times. Yeah. And it's like, oh, I'm going to eat as much mocha loco as I can. I love it.
