In a cell, it's like you just have this bag of molecules that's being shaken all the time and like that's how it runs. Nothing is guaranteed to be in a particular place unless it's like very bonded to be in that place. That's just so different from how we design objects ordinarily that when you think about things from that perspective, it makes a lot more sense why cryervation is even possible. It's it's incredibly strange that you can cryopreserve and rewarm anything. And so for context for people, we would be cooling for example like resected brain tissue to minus 130° and below. If you think about it, let's say that you took like a really complicated factory, right? And you stopped everyone in their tracks in the factory and then you spun them around and had them walk in a completely random direction and then have them like, you know, go back to their normal walking speed, but everyone was walking random directions. Like that's what cry preservation is. It kind of just like randomizes the molecular motion of all the molecules after you go to like very low temperatures, which is super weird, right? Almost everything that we build at the human scale is incompatible with that. We don't really have systems that are invariant to that kind of randomization, but cells are for some reason. If I hadn't spent so much time hanging out in the cell, I think I wouldn't really have internalized how weird it is that the cells just want to passive diffusion. Like the cells run on molecules bouncing about in random directions. I do feel like they understand carbonation better for seeing the link between this property and the fact that cells evolve to run with very high amounts of thermal noise and therefore like have all these properties that make them so good at being invariant to this like randomization that we induce with cor preservation.
