  when I think about uh moral philosophy that that was something I was working on or towards you know I never I didn't write a dissertation but yeah certainly uh went deep in the in the subject. Um what I loved about Aristotle was um and and this came out you know it's like my re-entry into the public uh debates about things is like I wrote an essay against stoicism I think in 2017 because there had been this resurgence of interest in stoicism people like Ryan Holiday um you know writing uh Tim Ferrris speaking about it um and and because I I was aware of these debates that occurred in ancient uh henistic times that uh that stoicism wasn't the end-all be-all of things um and that there were other schools of thought. I thought, you know, I decided to write an essay that basically would critique uh stoicism from an aristoian point of view. Um and some of the main debates back then and to this day are about how much um how much of the good life is self-sufficient or how much depends upon external goods in the world and those can be you know external goods sounds chunky but it's like you know friendship it's family it's it's also things like homes and libraries but it's like you know can can you live a virtuous good life whether or not you have these things. That debate raged for uh you know centuries. So to see one side of that debate become really popular. I thought it was worth mentioning some of those differences and that brought Aristotle back to me and it reminded me what I loved about um you know his view of life uh which is that we do have to consider these external goods as somehow necessary to some of the most important highest things that we pursue and we shouldn't neglect that. there's all the and I maybe we don't want to get into the like nuances and subtleties about how stoics maneuver around this stuff but but to me that that was a a key difference and then as in the in the niclon ethics just really focusing on character that was something that um I cared a lot about and then when I I started to work on the teal fellowship I quickly realized that we're evaluating the character of people
